Full-Time MBA Application Feedback from the Admissions Committee

We understand your disappointment in the decision received on your Full-Time MBA application to UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. Every year, we receive more applications from talented candidates than we have space for in the class. Each MBA candidate is carefully considered by several members of the Admissions Committee who independently review all application materials.

Below are some of the areas that distinguish competitive applicants. Candidates who are not admitted may find the information below helpful in assessing their candidacy should they wish to reapply for a future application cycle. Please note, we do not provide individualized feedback on applications.

Thank you for considering UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School.
    Communication
    Successful applicants...
    • Clearly and succinctly express themselves in the admission essays and interview, providing focused responses and appropriate details.

    • Convey their interest in Kenan‐Flagler's Full-Time MBA Program and the specific ways in which they plan to contribute to the program.
    • Utilize the essays to highlight their work accomplishments (with examples), global experiences, community leadership and extracurricular activities, as well as their quantitative and analytical skills.
    • Showcase strong writing skills in their essays, with attention to organization, writing mechanics, grammar, punctuation and spelling.
    Career Outlook
    Successful applicants...
    • Clearly articulate their career goals and the skills they hope to develop through obtaining an MBA from UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School. They will have insight into what experiences and skills they can leverage to future employers and what role an MBA can play for them in their careers.
    • Post impressive career results to date. Their resumes and letters of recommendation detail the contributions they have made to their organizations.
    • Possess goals that will transfer well from their current career positions to UNC Kenan‐Flagler, from which there are existing established recruitment relationships or a history of successful independent career searches.
    • Show leadership in their organization through project management, team leadership and demonstrated job progression. Successful applicants may also have leadership roles in community and non‐profit organizations outside of work.
    Recommendations
    Successful applicants...
    • Solicit letters of recommendation from supervisors, managers or clients who comment, in detail with examples, on the applicant's contributions to the organization.
    Academic Performance
    Successful applicants...
    • Excel academically. Successful applicants often have undergraduate GPAs higher than that of the currently enrolled students. Refer to our MBA Class Profile for more details.
    • Highlight study abroad or global immersion experiences on their resumes to speak to their international exposure.
    • Submit GMAT or GRE scores that demonstrate a strong quantitative and analytical background. In some cases, candidates may want to submit a GMAT/GRE waiver for consideration, which will not impact an admission decision.
Tips for Reapplying in the Future
    • To reapply for a future application cycle, candidates must submit a new application with new essays, a resume, and a new letter of recommendation. Test scores (if still valid) and transcripts will transfer to a new application. We expect candidates to provide updated information in a new application that reflects growth and progress since their last application.
    • We do not reconsider applicants that did not receive admission in the same application cycle, but we welcome them to reapply in a subsequent year. Prior admission decisions will not be reflected in future applications; reapplicants will be evaluated based on the new application materials and an updated interview.
    • Please refer to the MBA Class Profile to review our test score averages to ensure scores are competitive.
