Frequently Asked Questions about the MBA Waitlist

We appreciate that you have invested significant time and effort in your application, and we want to provide you with a clear understanding of what it means to receive a waitlist decision. Answers to the most commonly asked questions regarding the MBA waitlist at UNC Kenan-Flagler are provided below.

Thank you for your continued interest in the Full-time MBA program at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School.

What is the waitlist and who is on it?

The waitlist consists of a group of applicants who are competitive for admission, but to whom we were unable to make an initial offer of admission. The use of a waitlist allows us additional time to consider your application until we have a better sense of our enrollment numbers. If space becomes available in the class, we will extend offers of admission to some waitlisted candidates. The number of admit offers made to candidates on the waitlist depends on the overall class enrollment.

Why was my application placed on the waitlist?

Due to space constraints and a highly competitive applicant pool, we are unable to admit all qualified applicants to our Full-Time MBA program. Waitlisted candidates may excel in many areas of consideration, but lower in a specific area, such as professional experience, academic preparedness, or recommendations. While we are unable to offer specific feedback on your application, it may be useful to review our most recent Class Profile.

When will I receive a final decision about my application?

If you would like to remain on our waitlist, please respond immediately to ensure your place on the waitlist. To accept your spot on the waitlist, log into your application status page and click “Waitlist Response Form.”

We understand you would like a final decision as soon as possible. We will continue to review waitlisted candidates after each application Round. Occasionally, we will update your admission decision on a subsequent Round decision release date, but the vast majority of waitlist decisions are released in late spring and throughout the summer prior to the beginning of the school year.

Do you rank the waitlist?

No. Upon review of the waitlist, we will select candidates for admission within the context of the entire applicant pool.

How many applicants are on the waitlist? How many applicants will be accepted from the waitlist?

We certainly understand your interest in clarifying your chances of gaining admission; however, the number of people on the waitlist does not indicate how many offers will be made to waitlisted candidates.

The decision to admit a candidate from the waitlist depends on: 1) the strength of the applicant pool, 2) the extent to which an individual's talents and accomplishments balance the current class, and 3) the number of available spaces in the class. Since these factors vary from year to year, we cannot provide a definite number of how many applicants will be admitted from the waitlist.

Is there anything I can do to improve my chances for admission?

Our decision to admit an applicant from the waitlist is based on the current information in your application file. You are welcome to complete our Waitlist Additional Information Form to provide additional information that you believe would be beneficial for us to consider (e.g., recent job promotions, course grades, new test scores, etc.). If you retake the GMAT, GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS, please email your unofficial score report immediately after finishing the test. Keep in mind that you are not required to submit any additional information to the Admissions Committee to accept your spot on the waitlist.

Are candidates admitted from the waitlist considered for fellowship awards?

There is no guarantee that candidates admitted from the waitlist will receive a fellowship. All applicants are reviewed for fellowships and no separate application is required for consideration. You will be notified if you received a fellowship at the time of admission.

Do you have any additional advice for me about the waitlist?
  • Indicate your intention to stay on the waitlist via the “Waitlist Response” form. Candidates who do not respond will be removed from the waitlist and their applications withdrawn.
  • If you have not yet been interviewed, you will receive an e-mail invitation shortly with instructions on how to schedule.
  • Responsibly manage your alternate business school options, understanding that you may not be admitted to UNC Kenan-Flagler. If you no longer wish to remain on the waitlist, please email us to let us know.
  • Finally, we ask for your patience. We will continue to give your application thorough consideration after each Round. Most updated decisions are released in late spring and throughout the summer until the start of orientation.
